Most famously, the band Weezer began wearing such fashion at concerts and in press photos. As the term "emo" has become more common amongst mainstream music fans and the media, and it is now used to describe a wide array of musical styles that aren't strictly emo (such as post-hardcore and metalcore ), this is no longer the most common form of emo fashion, though the "emo nerd" look is still one of the most widely recognised stereotypes of the emo subculture .
Fashion in the Emo and Metalcore scenes often couple styles of the 80's with a more metrosexual look. Emo kids are known to wear skinny fit pants (male and female) with ConverseChuck Taylor Allstars or Vans pumps, or any of a wide variety of walking or athletic shoes (for instance, Sauconysneakers). Black band t-shirts are common, as are studded or canvas belts. Hooded sweat shirts are often printed with band logos, but work-type jackets and sweaters are common as well. Often worn are pieces of clothing such as track jackets, button-up shirts, and ties.
The most common emo haircut is jet-black dyed hair sloped to cover, or partially cover, one of the eyes . This is known as a frollett (frontal Mullet ); however, it's also referred to as an "emo comb-over" or "emo-sweep" because the way the hair sweeps from the back of the head looks like the way an old man would grow a patch of comb-over hair to hide a bald spot. They are often compared to 1980s hair bands, due to the extreme nature of some of the styles.
The band Refused are often credited with popularising this hairstyle. They had uniform jet black hair sloped to partially obscure the right eye.
As with clothing, the hairstyles of emo kids vary depending on the individual and on their music influences. However, there are several common aspects of emo hairstyles.
