Jewish
family in
Vienna

Austria
, and died of a
heart attack

London

England
. While growing up in Austria, he wanted to become a musician, then studied law. He was drawn to films, while studying at the University of Vienna, and eventually became a cameraman. He moved to the U.S. in 1929 and peformed many behind-the-scenes jobs before becoming a movie director. He directed many different film genres including thrillers, westerns, film noir, and play adaptions. Many actors appearing in Zinnemann's films received Academy award nominations for his films including Frank Sinatra, Audrey Hepburn, Glynis Johns, Paul Scofield, Robert Shaw, Wendy Hiller, Jason Robards, Vanessa Redgrave, Jane Fonda, Gary Cooper and Maximilian Schell.
He won the
Academy Award for Directing
for
From Here to Eternity
and
A Man for All Seasons
and also took home the Best Picture Oscar for producing the latter film.
